Abstract

Background: Sheik Muhammad Mutawalli Al-Sharawi was a prolific scholar admired in Egypt and the Islamic world, with an extraordinary ability to interpret the Quran through a systematic methodology that is easily understood by various audiences.

Aims: This research aims to analyze the interpretative patterns used by Sheik Al-Sharawi in Tafsir Khawatirusy Sharawi and to examine how Al-Sharawi utilizes the sources of interpretation bi al-ma'thur and bi al-ra'yi.

Methods: The research uses a qualitative approach with the library research method, and for data analysis, content analysis is employed on the Tafsir Khawatirusy Sharawi and other supporting literature.

Results: Research found that Sheik Al-Sharawi used various interpretative styles, including linguistic, scientific, jurisprudential, and philosophical styles. His sources of interpretation included bi al-mathur (the Quran, hadith, and opinions of companions) and bi al-ra'y (pure ijtihad with consideration of the socio-cultural context).

Conclusions: Al-Sha'rawi's interpretation methodology offers a holistic approach that bridges profound linguistic analysis with contextual societal realities. His tafsir works significantly contribute to the development of Islamic exegesis by making complex textual and philosophical teachings accessible and relevant to contemporary society.
